Tazio Trends: Getting ready for the Christmas retail rush

Summer is only just in the rear view mirror but the thoughts of many retail recruiters are already turning to the festive season.

For them an early Christmas present would be a team ready to start onboarding as the Halloween decorations are being taken down and the pumpkins are being pulped.

Around a fifth of the UK’s retail revenues are generated in the run up to December 25th according to British Retail Consortium figures. In other words, it’s a critical time of year and one that relies on having the right people in the right place at the right time.

If 2026 follows in the footsteps of 2025, recruiters are likely to be inundated with applications. Last year searches for seasonal jobs between August and October 2025 hit their strongest level in at least eight years, according to Indeed Hiring Lab, with retail positions dominating the top ten most-searched for seasonal roles.

High applicant volumes won’t be news to hiring teams, but when you add in the time pressure of an immovable deadline (Christmas isn’t going anywhere), cautious consumers and higher employment costs, the pressure is on to make effective hiring decisions.

Building a team ready to drive revenues

Successful retail teams bring together a range of people with complementary abilities. They combine:

  • Customer-facing skills – communicates clearly, reads social cues, and confidently recommends or upsells without being pushy, even under pressure from queues or complaints.
  • Operational and practical abilities – accurate with tills, cash handling and stock, multitasks under time pressure, comfortable with point-of-sale and click-and-collect systems.
  • Behavioural and situational judgement – stays composed under pressure, adapts to shift changes, solves problems on the spot, and reliably shows up for every shift.
  • Team and culture fit – collaborates smoothly with colleagues, brings a genuine service mindset, and represents the brand's tone and standards appropriately.
  • Resilience – they don’t walk away after one tough shift.

Anecdotally, we’ve heard from a firm preparing to process around 500,000 applicants during this period. When you’re dealing with those numbers in such a short time frame identifying people with, for example, the confidence to turn browsing customers into buyers is easier said than done.

Understandably recruiters manually filtering applications are likely to look for signals they can use to make quick decisions, such as keywords and educational qualifications. They may also close application windows early when applicant numbers become overwhelming. In both cases, this will lock people out of the process who have genuine potential.

Relying on CVs is equally ineffectual at this time of year. Seasonal work attracts students, career-changers and people re-entering the workforce, who may have limited relevant experience on paper but are just right for retail in person.

Turning a Christmas challenge into a Christmas cracker

Fortunately, these challenges are surmountable and it’s worth overcoming them. Gallup's global research found highly engaged, well-matched teams across a variety of sectors generate 23% higher profitability and 18% higher sales productivity, they also experience less staff turnover.

The retailers that achieve this will be the ones who reshape their recruitment process before the clocks go back. That means automating essential eligibility checks so recruiters aren't buried in admin, replacing CV-first judgement with objective, role-relevant assessment of potential, and keeping every candidate – hired or not – engaged enough to want to come back next year or apply for a permanent role.

That's precisely the connected journey we’ve built at Tazio and it's not too late to put it to work, says Head of Sales and Solutions Justin Somerville-Cotton: “We can move very quickly and have our systems up, running and processing candidates within weeks. That includes Sift to handle volume without losing consistency, Assess to identify who can actually do the job regardless of what their CV says, and Engage to make sure strong candidates who don't get an offer this time stay warm for the next one. In a season that can define a retailer’s year, identifying genuine retail talent is vital – by the time you find out you haven’t got the right people the opportunity has gone.”

If your Christmas hiring process is still leaning on CVs and manual screening to get through the volume, now is the moment to rethink it, not next November.
